The Salmon’s Call is a powerful documentary that explores the intricate spiritual and cultural relationship between wild salmon and Indigenous people that has lasted centuries. It is told through an Indigenous lens and gives a unique voice to this vital symbol of renewal, transformation, and resilience.
ABOUT
Joy Haskell (she/her) is an Indigenous Filmmaker based in Vancouver, BC. She was recently elected to the Canadian Media Producers Association BC Branch Council and sits on the Indigenous Working Group for the CMPA. She is also a producer on a docuseries with Big Time Decent Productions on a reality show based in the Yukon Territory.
In 2020, Joy started Firediva Productions, an independent film company with a slate of original television series in development including Hey Cuzzin, Greyfeather, Dead Serious and a documentary titled Wild Connections. In addition, her feature film Cookies or Crack is in pre-production. Joy is also in post-production on her documentary The Salmon’s Call with Cedar Island Films.
Joy has consistently thrived in diverse roles as a writer, director, and producer, earning herself a reputation as a multi-hyphenate creative and an astute leader. Joy’s work brings together comedy and drama with a dark touch, resulting in sharp social commentary and a unique narrative experience. She specializes in crafting moving stories that captivate audiences and feature compelling and addictive characters. Her ability to lead with both innovation and empathy paired with her dedication to uplifting communities and fostering change underscores her passionate approach to storytelling.
Joy began her artistic career in theatre, specializing in acting, singing and dancing. Joy is an alumni of programs such as Reelworld E20, Warner Media, Canadian Academy Directors Program for Women, and Women in The Director's Chair. Joy‘s new prodco venture, Happy Heart Studios, with Matt Shewchuk (Big Time Decent) has new shows in development that include an original tv series and factual docuseries.
